July 2008: Despite a softening economy, the paralegal field continues to grow, offering many opportunities for those with the training to succeed in this lucrative field. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008 - 09 Edition, “Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employers are trying to reduce costs and increase the availability and efficiency of legal services by hiring paralegals to perform tasks once done by lawyers. Paralegals are performing a wider variety of duties, making them more useful to businesses.”

Salaries are also climbing: according to the 2008 National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) National Utilization and Compensation Report, the average annual salary, including bonuses, for a paralegal was $50,953, up from $46,862 in 2004 (data is based on a survey conducted between October, 2007 and February 2008).
