Salute to You!The first week in November is Non-Traditional Student Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the fastest growing segment of the post-secondary student population. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, almost three-quarters of those pursuing higher education are non-traditional (generally defined as those older than 25). The majority work full- or part-time, have dependents, or may be single parents. For many non-traditional students, distance learning makes the most sense for their busy lifestyles. Most Blackstone students are “non-traditional,” juggling their various roles as employees, parents and spouses; many belong to military families who are on the move and want to plan ahead for a new career. So if you are over the age of 25 and are thinking about going back to school, you will be in good company at Blackstone. You will also have the opportunity to get to know your fellow students as a member of Blackstone’s online community by participating in our discussion board and live chat room. Blackstone students and alumni are always eager to provide support, share advice, and encourage their fellow students to complete their studies. Think Pink!October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating women about the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Since this awareness program began in 1985, more and more women are getting mammograms on a regular basis, and the number of breast cancer deaths is on the decline. Here are a few statistics about breast cancer that highlight why it’s so important to have routine annual screening mammograms to ensure early detection of this disease: • Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. • The most proven and significant risk factors for getting breast cancer are being female and aging. • An estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. this year. • An estimated 1,990 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in the U.S. this year. • In the U.S. a woman has a 1 in 8 (12 percent) risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. • The five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982). • A woman’s chance of developing breast cancer increases with age. Approximately 95 percent of all breast cancers occur in women 40 years of age and older. • Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women. • In the United States today, there are nearly 2.5 million breast cancer survivors—the largest group of cancer survivors in the country. • This month, remind the women in your life to have routine annual mammograms. Many communities throughout the country are holding events to raise money for organizations that promote breast cancer awareness and research. Like Blackstone, which made a donation to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation in October, you can show your support throughout the year by donating or volunteering for these organizations. Keeping in TouchIf you are a current Blackstone student or graduate, we ask your cooperation in keeping our staff informed of changes in your contact information, whether it is your mailing address, e-mail address, or phone number. If you do not provide advance notice of a change of address, we will be unable to get your shipments to you on a timely basis and you will be responsible for the costs associated with re-shipping materials. For those who pay for their course monthly via automatic credit card or checking account debits, we also ask you to keep our records up-to-date if you have any changes to your account information. Current e-mail address information is also vital since many of our student communications, such as important reminders from our Education Department and this newsletter, are sent via e-mail in an effort to save paper, trees and money.
