Back to School. . .Your kids are outfitted with new clothes and backpacks filled with fresh school supplies. Even if you haven’t been in school in years or don’t have children in school, this time of year can still give you a twinge of anticipation – and you may miss the excitement of learning new things and meeting new challenges. You may even be thinking that the timing is right for you to go back to school yourself, whether you are pondering a career change or just want to advance your knowledge of a particular subject. Distance learning may be just what you need to further your education, but how do you know if the time is right for you to go back to school? E-learners.com suggests you ask yourself the following questions: • Do you have a clear of understanding of what you want to accomplish? Knowing that your coursework will help you qualify for a promotion, start a new career or strengthen your technical skills, etc. will keep you motivated even when the going gets tough. • Does your employer offer tuition assistance? More than 50% of companies with 100 or more employees offer some kind of tuition assistance. This is a benefit well worth taking advantage of if your employer provides it. • Does your employer support your goals? If you spend your lunchtime doing homework or need to take an occasional vacation day to study, will your employer understand? • Will your family provide the support network you need? Make sure your spouse, children, etc. know that things may be different around the house and your expectations may change. Family members need to be aware that they may have to take on additional responsibilities as well as allow you the quiet time you need to study. • Do you understand the time commitment that will be required? Do you have a plan to make it work? While online education may be available 24/7, you need to examine your schedule to determine what you may need to eliminate (sleeping late? your book club? golf?) to make time for your schoolwork. • Do you make things happen or do things happen to you? Psychologists describe decision-making ability as “locus of control.” Students with an internal locus of control believe that their actions will earn them good grades. Students with an external locus of control believe that poor grades are determined by things beyond their control (such as an unfair professor). An internal locus of control is a key to success, especially for online learners. Online education offers the flexibility you may need to achieve your goals, but self-motivation is the key to successful completion of any program. So be sure to ask yourself the questions above and perform an honest self-assessment before enrolling in any education program. Should You Choose Online Education? If you have made the decision to go back to school, you may be unsure about whether you should choose a traditional site-based school or a distance education program. Here are some advantages to choosing online education that you should take into account when making this decision: • Availability of courses: Many traditional schools offer certain courses on a limited basis so you may have to wait a semester or even more to get the course you want. At Blackstone, which features open enrollment, you can start your program at any time – you don’t need to wait for a new semester to start. • Lower costs: Tuition at many distance education schools is lower than that of traditional schools. Online schools like Blackstone can offer lower tuition because we do not have the costs associated with maintaining a campus. Furthermore, Blackstone includes the cost of books in tuition, unlike most site-based institutions. • Saving time: Online students save time by not having to commute or hunt for a parking space – time that can be spent studying or enjoying family activities. • Scheduling flexibility: Are you a morning person? Then as a distance education student you can choose to study at the time of day that’s best for you. If you work, you can schedule your study sessions in the evening or whatever time is most convenient. This flexibility is very helpful in alleviating stress when you are juggling a job, school and other commitments. • Setting your own pace: Not all distance education schools allow you to set your own pace. But Blackstone does, giving you optimum flexibility. You can read your study materials and take your exams whenever you wish, as long as you complete your program within the time allowed (two years for career diploma programs and one year for advanced paralegal certificate courses). • Providing options when you return to work: If you are a stay-at-home parent or you are unemployed, pursuing your education will offer advantages when you are looking for a job. By furthering your education, you are demonstrating that you used your time at home wisely and you are keeping your skills up-to-date. • Specialization: Some site-based or distance education schools will have course requirements to fulfill that may not pertain to your career goals. At Blackstone, your studies will be focused on preparing you for a job in the field you choose to study. For busy adults, this can be important in allowing you to use your available time most efficiently. • Avoiding weather hassles: It’s 7:00 p.m. on a cold, rainy night. Where would you rather be: driving to your 7:30 p.m. class or seated at your computer in your warm and cozy home office? If the criteria above are important to you, then distance education can be the right choice for you. Did You Know?Did you know that in some countries a student’s educational future is determined as early as grade school? Children can be tested and tracked before their teen years and placed in college prep or vocational programs based on these assessments. Even if a student develops a new interest later in life, he or she may not be able to pursue that interest. In the U.S., many options are available to young people – home schooling, tutoring, public schools, private schools, GED programs, etc. There are also many higher education options available for adults of all ages, whether they are working or wish to pursue their studies full time. Online learning is accessible to virtually anyone of any age, living anywhere. Even if you have experienced hardships, live in a remote area that has no site-based schools, move a great deal (as many military families do), have a disability, or have financial limitations, furthering your education through online study is possible. Blackstone’s entrance requirements are simple: you must have a high school diploma or GED, and should be able to read at a tenth-grade reading level or higher.
